Internships / Gap Year

Internships

Each year, 250 Centrale Lille engineering graduates become managers in numerous companies.

Internships are an integral part of the Centrale education and provide students with in-company learning and active engineering responsibilities. They provide students with a first experience in the corporate and industrial world.

The first year internship

This is a discovery internship that covers aspects of production (labour and work site internships) or a service organisation. The internship must be at least four weeks long and starts in mid-January.

The second year internship

The second year internship provides a better understanding of the reality of engineering work, both with respect to the technical aspects and the human responsibility aspects.

Under the responsibility of an engineer, students manage a technical or economic study.

Apprehending the goals of the study, identifying the challenges of the study, and concluding the study are essential to succeeding in the internship, which should provide an initial, general experience with the roles and responsibilities of an engineer.

This internship must be at least three months long, and begins in mid-May.   Depending on the company's and the student's willingness, the internship may last until mid-September.

The engineering student is supervised both by an Ecole professor with expertise in the internship area and by someone from the company.

An internship log monitors the student's activity and ensures that the activity is assessed. This internship should give rise to a post-assessment so that the student can assimilate everything learned.

The third year internship

In the third year, students choose to gain more in-depth knowledge in one of the eleven in-depth option areas, and must select a career stream from the suggested seven.

The internship content may be related to the in-depth scientific area (option) or the career stream. Regardless of the content, the subject of the internship is determined with the supervisor of the reference option or subject area.

The general objective is to provide interns with real engineering responsibility to complete their preparation for the professional world. Internships and internship searches are managed by the Espace Entreprises, the Scientific Engineering supervisors and the stream supervisors.

The student engineer carries out an internship in a company starting in April and lasting for at least three months but no more than six months. This internship is supervised and the subject of a written report and a viva voce in front of a jury.

International internship

A significant international experience is crucial to an engineering education.

Therefore, students must complete their education and training with a continuous, three-month experience abroad.

Whether in a company or a partner university laboratory, the objective is for the student to be immersed in a rich educational environment.

N.B.: the three-month international experience can also be academic.

Upon their return, students validate their experience by presenting a poster in front of a jury of professors and peers.

Caesura

2011: Over 60 engineering students decided to take a caesural year

70%went abroad

The caesural professional year enabled willing students to immerse themselves in a company for a year or to build a more personal professional project before returning to the Ecole to continue their third year of study. For a first professional experience, students above all grasped the benefit of and need for the training essential to their professional project.
